Over the weekend, the Liberian-flagged container vessel MSC ELSA 3 tragically capsized off the coast of Kerala, India, while en route with over 640 containers, including 13 marked hazardous, such as calcium carbide. Fortunately, all crew members were rescued.
However, the impact on global logistics and supply chain operations is already becoming clear.
What Happened?
- A foreign cargo ship, sailing under the Liberian flag, capsized and sank in the Arabian Sea, around 40 nautical miles off the Kochi coast, Kerala.
- The incident happened on May 24, 2025.
Who Was Onboard?
- The ship had 24 crew members, including:
- All were rescued safely by the Indian Coast Guard in a quick and daring operation.
What Caused the Incident?
- The cargo containers shifted during bad weather, likely due to rough sea conditions.
- This destabilized the ship, causing it to tilt and eventually sink.
Aftermath:
- Several containers fell into the sea.
- At least one container washed ashore near Kollam, a coastal town south of Kochi.
- Authorities fear more containers may drift, posing risks to the environment and local fishing boats.
Environmental Concerns:
- There is a risk of oil spill from the sunken ship.
- The Indian Coast Guard and pollution control teams are closely monitoring the area to prevent environmental damage.
Why This Matters?
This incident introduces serious consequences for global shippers and supply chains:
- 🔻 Loss of high-value cargo, including regulated hazardous goods
- 🔻 Operational uncertainty across interconnected shipping lanes
- 🔻 Increased environmental risk in the region
- 🔻 Limited real-time visibility into container status
